Best Chocolate Factory in NZ

During our summer holiday this year, we drove through Matakana on our way back from Northland. While there, we purchased a bar of Bennet's Chocolate and Fejoa. It was absolutely wonderful! The clerk at the shop we purchased it told us that Bennet's was made in Mangawhai, which was only about 45 minutes away, and the factory offered a large variety of individual chocolates as well as offering a tour of their factory.

Well, who could resist going on a chocolate tour?

The drive to Mangawhai, from Matakana, is picturesque and absolutely gorgeous as you drive through the winding roads of the hills and farm country. You could get to Mangawhai via the main highway as well, but I recommend the scenic route.

Unfortunately, when we arrived at the factory portion was closed as it was a Sunday. The shop was open however, and we each purchased four of their specialty chocolates from the large array of flavours available in the counter.

Best Lemon Slice in NZ

Kristie and I found this place last summer, while on a road trip with her parents on the south island.  The town of Springfield (giggle...it sounds like I'm talking about The Simpsons) is located in the Selwyn district of Canterbury near the Southern Alps.  It is pretty much a town for skiers to hang out in, while skiing the Alps.

The Yellowshack Cafe is located on Highway 73, just as you are leaving town, it is right next to the big donut.

The service there was extremely friendly, and as the title of this blog suggests, it has the best lemon slice in NZ!  If the staff doesn't offer to heat up the slice for you (she did for us), be sure to ask for it heated up.  Then, bring it over to the giant donut and have a picnic.
